![]() ![]() Bass frequencies start on the left, with midrange frequencies in the middle, and treble on the far right (like a piano). ![]() From left to right, you’ll find “sliders” that allow you to adjust certain frequency bands up or down along the dB scale. The graphical EQ - which is what we’re going to focus on for most of our walkthrough - looks like a graph (no kidding!) with frequencies on one axis and decibels (dB) on the other. If used properly, EQ can smooth out audio for just the right touch. But the kind of EQ we’re talking about here offers control over the different sound registers to achieve a refined result. Speaking more digitally, you may also associate EQ with effects like reverb or echo, or popular EQ presets like “Rock,” “Jazz,” or “Concert,” among others built into popular devices and headphones. They’re simple: if you wanted more low end, you goosed the bass if you like to hear the cymbals and wanted to add some shimmer to the sound, you’d likely add some treble. Most people are aware of the basic three levels of equalization - bass, mid, and treble - that you have likely seen on your parents’ home stereo receiver. The technology first took off as a piece of analog electronics that was initially used in recording studios before making its way into the home. Whether analog or digital, an EQ is used to adjust different elements of sound to achieve an end result that appeals to the listener. What does an equalizer do?Īt its most basic definition, an equalizer manipulates frequencies. With it, you can pull out the distinctive shimmer of hi-hat cymbals otherwise drowned out by a dominant vocal track, or even help mellow out the narrator’s voice in an audiobook. With these variables in play, an EQ serves an invaluable role for anyone serious about their jams. Not only do the natural sounds of the track respond uniquely to different EQ levels, but in the case of digital music, you may also need to cover imperfections introduced by certain file compression formats that can affect the overall audio quality. The music you’re listening to also plays a factor. The shape of the room or ambient noise can each have a nasty effect on how our music sounds. Or maybe those vintage speakers you found sound a little muddy in the mid and high frequencies - EQ can clean some of that up and help them sing.Īlso, we don’t always get to listen to music in ideal environments. Maybe you have a bass-heavy pair of headphones that you need to tone down a bit. ![]() Electronics manufacturers have their own ideas about what a piece of gear should sound like, but EQ lets you have your say. Then there are the headphones, speakers, and other devices we use to listen to music. Maybe you like a little extra treble (or have a harder time hearing it) or you prefer a heavier thump in the low-end - EQ gives you the freedom to tailor the sound to the way you like it. But more specifically, because of the unique shapes of our ears, and even the hearing issues we may develop as we age, everyone hears music differently. Music is a personal endeavor and everyone likes what they like. Let’s start with the most important: preference. There are several reasons why you might want to use some EQ on your music, and they range from simple personal preference to more complex reasons such as format quality/characteristics and, perhaps most importantly, the effects that the devices and playback systems we use have on the music we listening to. For example, Google Translate once presupposed that doctors were male while nurses were female in certain languages, while Bing’s translator translated phrases like “the table is soft” as the feminine “die Tabelle” in German, which refers to a table of figures. “With state-of-the-art results, we believe SeamlessM4T is an important breakthrough in the AI community’s quest toward creating universal multitask systems,” Meta wrote in the blog post.īut one wonders what biases the model might contain.Ī recent piece in The Conversation points out the many flaws in AI-powered translation, including different forms of gender bias. It attributes this to the rich combination of speech and text data in the training dataset, which Meta believes gives SeamlessM4T a leg up over speech-only and text-only models. Meta claims that on an internal benchmark, SeamlessM4T performed better against background noises and “speaker variations” in speech-to-text tasks compared to the current state-of-the-art speech transcription model. Researchers aligned 443,000 hours of speech with texts and created 29,000 hours of “speech-to-speech” alignments, which “taught” SeamlessM4T how to transcribe speech to text, translate text, generate speech from text and even translate words spoken in one language into words in another language. Whatever the case, Meta used the scraped text and speech to create the training dataset for SeamlessM4T, called SeamlessAlign. Some have filed lawsuits against companies building AI tools on top of publicly available data, arguing that the vendors should be compelled to provide credit if not compensation - and clear ways to opt out.īut Meta claims that the data it mined - which might contain personally identifiable information, the company admits - wasn’t copyrighted and came primarily from open source or licensed sources. ![]() Not every content creator agrees with the practice of leveraging public data to train models that could be used commercially. In an interview with TechCrunch, Juan Pino, a research scientist at Meta’s AI research division and a contributor on the project, wouldn’t reveal the exact sources of the data, saying only that there was “a variety” of them. In developing it, Meta says that it scraped publicly available text (in the order of “tens of billions” of sentences) and speech (4 million hours) from the web. Mozilla, meanwhile, spearheaded Common Voice, one of the largest multi-language collections of voices for training automatic speech recognition algorithms.īut SeamlessM4T is among the more ambitious efforts to date to combine translation and transcription capabilities into a single model. Meta isn’t the only one investing resources in developing sophisticated AI translation and transcription tools.īeyond the wealth of commercial services and open source models already available from Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI and a number of startups, Google is creating what it calls the Universal Speech Model, a part of the tech giant’s larger effort to build a model that can understand the world’s 1,000 most-spoken languages. And it builds on Massively Multilingual Speech, Meta’s framework that provides speech recognition, language identification and speech synthesis tech across more than 1,100 languages. SeamlessM4T is something of a spiritual successor to Meta’s No Language Left Behind, a text-to-text machine translation model, and Universal Speech Translator, one of the few direct speech-to-speech translation systems to support the Hokkien language. “SeamlessM4T implicitly recognizes the source languages without the need for a separate language identification model.” ![]() “Our single model provides on-demand translations that enable people who speak different languages to communicate more effectively,” Meta writes in a blog post shared with TechCrunch. ![]() In its quest to develop AI that can understand a range of different dialects, Meta has created an AI model, SeamlessM4T, that can translate and transcribe close to 100 languages across text and speech.Īvailable in open source along with SeamlessAlign, a new translation dataset, Meta claims that SeamlessM4T represents a “significant breakthrough” in the field of AI-powered speech-to-speech and speech-to-text. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When your gameplay session is finished, Gaming Booster seamlessly resets your System to its previous state. As a result, today's average trunk utilization is miniscule compared to that for the early Internet. Recall how the carriers built out capacity during the Dot Com era, and the desire for spare capacity to deal with flash crowds and the like spurred carriers to richly trunk their networks. Most tier one ISPs ARE carriers, and the circuits come from another department in the same company. Those circuits were enormously expensive and added a layer of overhead. ISPs like BBN, UUNET, PSINet, and ANS leased circuits from carriers. Remember that the Internet was originally built by organizations that were NOT carriers. Furthermore fewer trunks led to less redundancy. In the early days trunks were unreliable compared to today's fiber circuits. The interstate highway model applied because each institutional user's "driveway" was clear but the highways were often congested. Back then congestion occurred most often in the network core at peering/exchange points, or on trunks when a trunk went down (which happened often). Some even had multiple connections for redundancy. In the old days every Internet user was connected via a company, agency, school, or institution with a "good" dedicated connection. ![]() In the highway system most congestion occurs on major arteries, while local streets are usually free and clear-but on today's Internet the opposite is true. The reason is that when it comes to traffic congestion and performance for the average Joe consumer Internet user, today's Internet is actually the inverse of the highway system. Although once apt, it is time to stop comparing the Internet to the interstate highway system. ![]() ![]() For starters, the screen hinge is recessed and hidden behind the top of the keyboard, so you don’t see obvious panel gaps or exhaust vents.
